Welcome to Year One/Two! (Class 3)

Dear Parents/Carers

Here is some helpful information on Year One/Two (Class 3).

Miss Morgan is the classroom Teacher

Mrs Din and Mrs Davies are the Learning Support Assistants

COOKING AND FRUIT

Thank you to those parents that have already contributed a £1 this week. This money is to buy fruit for the children at snack time. The money will also go towards ingredients for cooking activities. A money box and a list is in the classroom for your child to place their £!. Without this contribution snack time and cooking would not be possible. Please let us know if your child has any food allergies. Thanks!

P.E

P.E is on Monday. Please could the P.E kit be left in school for the half term. Just a quick reminder that jewellery should not be worn in school for safety reasons! Please label all school clothing and P.E kits. Thanks!

OUTSIDE PLAY

The children will have access to outside play for most of their session so it is important that they bring coats every day. Please put their names in their coats so there are no mix ups. Thanks!

WATER BOTTLES

The children can bring in water bottles to keep in the classroom to drink out of during the day (only water please). Please put their name on it and they can take it home every day to refill.

BOOK BAGS

Book bags will go home every day starting from Friday. Please can the children bring their book bags in daily, if you have signed the reading record then we will give your child a new book. Please continue to write comments in the reading records.

HOMEWORK BOOKS

The children will each have their own homework book. These will be given out every Friday. Please support and encourage your child to complete all set homework as it embeds and consolidates skills they are learning within the classroom. Please can the homework books be brought back to school on a Thursday so that new homework can be set for Friday.

TOPIC

This term’s topic is ‘Fire and Ice’. The children will learn in depth about the Great Fire of London. They will develop their chronological understanding by arranging key events in order. Children will explore why the fire spread so far and so quickly, they will research a significant person Samuel Pepys, who helped us to know so much about the fire. Children will compare fire fighting now and in the past, and how the fire changed London. The children will also be learning about different habitats that animals live in and how they survive in colder climates.

Through exploring books related to our topic the children will be developing their ability to put their ideas into sentences and organise their writing to suit the purpose e.g. diary writing with correct punctuation and accuracy. We will also work on sequencing ideas – developing their ability to use connectives to move their writing on

The children will also be using non-fiction texts linked to our topic ‘Fire and Ice’ to learn about the different organisational features, such as alphabetical order, headings, diagrams, captions, and bullet points.

During handwriting sessions we will be looking at pencil grip and control as well as continuing to develop the correct formation of lower and upper case letters

In maths sessions we will be exploring number formation, number patterns, 2D and 3D shapes, repeating patterns, bonds to 10, doubles to 10, one more and one less. It would be very helpful if you could help your child practise their maths at home. You can also find maths games and activities on www.topmarks.co.uk to play with your child.

If you have any concerns or questions concerning Year One/Two or your child don’t hesitate to ask. We look forward to a fun academic year!

Thank you for your support!
