Welcome to Daffodil class

Hello and welcome back for another exciting year in Maesglas Primary School.

Our new theme for the Spring term is ‘Medieval Madness’.  We will be finding out about castles in Wales, dragons and much much more.  To launch our exciting new topic, we will be having a Banquet on TBC

As part of the day we will be…

Decorating plates and cups

Making name cards

Making crowns

Making sandwiches

Decorating cakes

And enjoying a banquet fit for a King!!

In addition to the lovely activities to prepare our Banquet in school your child can dress up as a Prince, Princess, Knight, Welsh themed costume or even a fearsome dragon!

In Maths we will be learning, addition and subtraction problems including the use of money, ordering 2 and 3 digit numbers, doubles and halves within 20, 2, 5 and 10 times tables - we will also be dividing using these numbers, time - o'clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to times with the digital time, 2D and 3D shapes. It would be very helpful if you could help your child practise their maths at home. You can also find maths games and activities on www.topmarks.co.uk to play with your child

In Literacy we will be doing lots of different types of writing during the year.  We will be writing stories, letters, facts and much more! You can help develop this further at home by encouraging your child to write shopping lists, birthday cards and messages all of which they will enjoy!!  We will also be working really hard on the presentation of our work and we will even start to join up some of our letters

Our P.E Lesson is on a Tuesday afternoon. We are now asking the children to wear their P.E kits into school. The children will continue to extend their skills in gymnastics, games, athletics and dance over the year. Just a quick reminder that jewellery should not be worn in school for safety reasons!

Outside play -

The children will have access to outside play for most of their sessions so it is important that they bring coats every day. Please put their names in their coats so there are no mix ups. Thanks!

Home Learning

We will assign weekly home learning for your child. In line with Welsh Government advice we will be sending this online, and we will give you and your child all the information on how to access. We are aiming to create a 'Blended Learning Approach'. This will be to consolidate work completed in class, research new topics or work specifically aimed at practising a skill learnt in school. We will also send home weekly spellings for the children to practise. As always we hope you find these activities fun to complete together. Please ensure all homework is completed in pencil/pen and use the opportunity to reinforce correct letter and number formation when working in homework books.

Please continue the fantastic work from last year. Reading is still so important for the children’s development with their language, imagination and writing. By now most children understand how to decode and blend words and are confidently using their phonics as a tool. The focus this year will be to develop their understanding of what they read and to look at a variety of different texts. This will be through Guided Reading sessions and individual reading. We will also send home question prompts which provide you with more information about what the next steps are for your child. These are for your use. Reading books will be issued to your child every Monday and will then need to be returned to school by Friday ready to be re-issued the following week.

Water Bottles

We try to encourage the children to drink plenty during the school day and it leads to a greater independence and confidence if the children can take control of their own water. Please can the children bring a named water bottle to school.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information.  We look forward to working with you, to create a happy and fun environment where your child will continue to develop and grow.
