Daffodil and Sunflower Class – Year Two

Hello and welcome back for another exciting year in Maesglas Primary School. Year 2 is a very important Year and we will continue to provide you with information about how you can support your child at home and please feel free to come and see us if you have any questions.

Our new theme for the Spring term is ‘Medieval Madness’.  We will be finding out about castles in Wales, dragons and much much more.  To launch our exciting new topic we will be having a Banquet.

As part of the day we will be…

Decorating plates and cups

Making name cards

Making crowns

Making sandwiches

Decorating cakes

And enjoying a banquet fit for a King!!

We are also busy planning a trip to visit Cardiff Castle early in the New year.

In Maths we will be learning, addition and subtraction problems including the use of money, ordering 2 and 3 digit numbers, doubles and halves within 20 and up to 100, our 2, 5 and 10 times tables (challenging ourselves to 3 times tables) - we will also be dividing using these numbers, time - o'clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to times with the digital time, 2D and 3D shapes. We will be making different amounts of money using different coins and also working out how to give change.  It would be very helpful if you could help your child practise their maths at home. You can also find maths games and activities on www.topmarks.co.uk to play with your child.

In Literacy we will be doing lots of different types of writing during the year.  We will be writing stories, letters, facts and much more!

We will also be working really hard on the presentation of our work and we will even start to join up some of our letters.

We will be starting to practise some reading questions e.g. true and false and finding words in the text ready for our National tests.  You will see examples of these in some of our homework jobs.

P.E Lessons are on Monday afternoon. The children will continue to extend their skills in gymnastics, games, athletics and dance over the year. Please can you make sure that all of the school clothes have their name in. Just a quick reminder that jewellery should not be worn in school for safety reasons!

Outside play - The children will have access to outside play for most of their sessions so it is important that they bring coats every day. Please put their names in their coats so there are no mix ups. Thanks!

Homework Folders

We will continue to send weekly homework home with your child. This will be to consolidate work completed in class, research new topics or work specifically aimed at practising a skill learnt in school. Alongside this we will also be sending home comprehension homework for your children to complete and return. Comprehension activities encourage the children to think about what they are reading, infer what the writers or characters are thinking and look at different types of text. As well as this we will also send home weekly spellings for the children to practise. As always we hope you find these activities fun to complete together. Please ensure all homework is completed in pencil and use the opportunity to reinforce correct letter and number formation.

Homework will be sent home on a Friday and can be handed back in again by the following Wednesday.

Reading

Please continue the fantastic work from last term. Reading is still so important for the children’s development with their language, imagination and writing. By now most children understand how to decode and blend words and are confidently using their phonics as a tool. The focus this year will be to develop their understanding of what they read and to look at a variety of different texts. This will be through Guided Reading sessions and individual reading.

Water Bottles

We try to encourage the children to drink plenty during the school day and although we do provide some drinking cups it leads to a greater independence and confidence if the children can take control of their own water. Please can the children bring a named water bottle to school.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information.  We look forward to working with you, to create a happy and fun environment where your child will continue to develop and grow. Any questions then just pop in and see us.
