Sunflower Class - Miss Coldrick - Year 2

Croeso i Dosbarth Blodyn yr Haul
Welcome to Sunflower class

Hello and welcome back for another exciting term in Maesglas Primary School. We will continue to provide you with information about how you can support your child at home and please feel free to come and see us if you have any questions.

Our new theme for the Summer term is ‘Water, Water everywhere’. We will be finding out about pirates, animal that live in the sea and their habitats, the water cycle and much more!

InMathswe will be learning, addition and subtraction problems including the use of money, ordering 2 and 3 digit numbers, doubles and halves within 20, 2, 5 and 10 times tables - we will also be dividing using these numbers, time - o'clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to times with the digital time, 2D and 3D shapes. It would be very helpful if you could help your child practise their maths at home. You can also find maths games and activities on www.topmarks.co.uk to play with your child

InLiteracywe will be doing lots of different types of writing during the year.  We will be writing stories, letters, facts and much more! You can help develop this further at home by encouraging your child to write shopping lists, birthday cards and messages all of which they will enjoy!!  We will also be working really hard on the presentation of our work and we will even start to join up some of our letters

Our P.E Lessonis on a Monday afternoon. We are now asking the children to wear their P.E kits into school. The children will continue to extend their skills in gymnastics, games, athletics and dance over the year.Just a quick reminder thatjewelleryshouldnotbe worn in school for safety reasons

Outside play - The children will have access to outside play for most of their sessions so it is important that they bring coats every day. Please put their names in their coats so there are no mix ups. Thanks!

Home Learning

We will assign weekly home learning for your child. In line with Welsh Government advice we will be sending this online, and you can access this on HWB.We are aiming to create a 'Blended Learning Approach'. This will be to consolidate work completed in class, research new topics or work specifically aimed at practising a skill learnt in school.

We will send home learning books when reuested if you are uanble to access HWB.  As always we hope you find these activities fun to complete together. Please ensure all homework is completed in pencil/pen and use the opportunity to reinforce correct letter and number formation when working in homework books.

Homework will be sent home on a Friday and can be handed back in again by the following Wednesday.

Please continue the fantastic work from last term. Reading is still so important for the children’s development with their language, imagination and writing. By now most children understand how to decode and blend words and are confidently using their phonics as a tool. The focus this year will be to develop their understanding of what they read and to look at a variety of different texts. This will be through Guided Reading sessions and individual reading.

Water Bottles

We try to encourage the children to drink plenty during the school day and although we do provide some drinking cups it leads to a greater independence and confidence if the children can take control of their own water. Please can the children bring a named water bottle to school.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information.  We look forward to working with you, to create a happy and fun environment where your child will continue to develop and grow.
