Maple Class - Mrs M Rowlands - Year 4

Dosbarth Maple

Tymor Yr Hydref - Autumn Term

Hello and welcome back for another exciting year in Maesglas Primary School. We are pleased to be given the opportunity to be part of their learning this year. We have lots of exciting opportunities ahead of us this year with many hands on learning experience planned. We will continue to provide you with information about how you can support your child at home and please feel free to come and see us if you have any questions.

Maths

In Maths we will be learning about place value of numbers, multiplication facts with our 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables, doubling and halving numbers, using a written method to add and subtract. We will be learning to classify data using Carroll and Venn diagrams and recognise 2d shapes, identify lines of symmetry within 2d shapes and to classify shapes by their properties. It would be very helpful if you could help your child practise their maths at home. You can also find maths games and activities on www.topmarks.co.uk to play with your child.

Literacy

In Literacy we will be doing lots of different types of writing during the year. We will be writing setting descriptions, stories, letters, luggage tags, diaries, reports and much more! You can help develop this further at home by encouraging your child to write shopping lists, birthday cards and messages all of which they will enjoy!!  We will also be working really hard on the presentation of our work ensuring we are joining all our letters correctly.

P.E

P.E Lessons are on a Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure children have their full PE kit as this session, we are lucky to have a football coach come to teach us PE so depending on the weather will either be inside or outside. Please can you make sure that all of the school clothes have their name in. Just a quick reminder that jewellery should not be worn in school for safety reasons!

PE Kit:

  • White polo shirt

  • Black shorts

  • A tracksuit to wear outside during the colder sessions

  • Trainers/daps

Homework

We will continue to send weekly homework home with your child. This will be to consolidate work completed in class, research new topics or work specifically aimed at practising a skill learnt in school. We will be sending home weekly spellings for the children to practise and maths work to consolidate what we have been learning in class. As always we hope you find these activities fun to complete together. Please ensure all homework is completed in pencil and use the opportunity to reinforce correct letter and number formation. Homework will be sent home on a Friday and can be handed back in again by the following Wednesday.

Reading

Please continue the fantastic work from last year as reading at home is a proven way to excite and improve reading. Reading is still so important for the children’s development with their language, imagination and writing. By now most children understand how to decode and blend words and are confidently using their phonics as a tool. This year we will be developing their understanding of what they read during their Guided Reading sessions and individual reading time.

Water Bottles

We try to encourage the children to drink plenty during the school day and although we do provide some drinking cups it leads to a greater independence and confidence if the children can take control of their own water. Please can the children bring a named water bottle to school.

Uniform

This year we have introduced a lovely new uniform and all the children already look wonderful. Please make sure we keep up with the high standards already set by wearing full uniform each day. Our uniform is; green jumper, white polo shirt, navy trousers/skirts, navy tights, black shoes.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information. We look forward to working with you, to create a happy and fun environment where your child will continue to develop and grow. Any questions then just pop in and see us.
